Craft this Firework Mini Pinata with your Cricut and add a special touch to your party.
Welcome back Magical Crafters, we going to celebrate the 4th of July in style with these adorable Firework Mini Pinatas, which is perfect if you are the one hosting at your home. Not only are they cute for decorating the mantle and tables, but they double as surprise gift boxes for the little kiddos. These unique boxes can hold some of the toddler safe pull fireworks or had in money for each child to have a set amount to spend on fireworks at the stand.
As always, I have a crafting video over on the channel Ivy Lillies on YouTube, showing how to put together this pinata. Head over there if you love more visual tutorial guide. Click the button below to be taken to the video. And don’t forget to subscribe to the channel for more crafting adventures.
Supplies you’ll need to create this Firework mini pinata are…
- Cricut machine (I have the Cricut Explore Air 2)
- Light grip cutting mat
- Score pen
- Cardstock
- Fancy paper for details
- Crepe paper (for turning it into more of a pinata style)
- Glue (fast drying works best)
- String or Ribbon for hanging and the door opening.
- SVG file
- Details file
To get the SVG file, you can click on the button below, it’ll take you to my Etsy Shop, Ivy Lillies Crafting Co, where you can purchase and download the file.
I also made some detail pieces if you want to make it look more festive which includes stars and stripes scaled to fit the firework. These are free and can be found in the Magical Crafting Library. Please note, I do try to keep the details and pinata shape the same size when saving them, Cricut Design Space may put them at different sizes when you upload them. So be sure to make sure everything is scaled to the same size before cutting.
Once you have everything downloaded, it is time to upload into Cricut Design Space. If you have a different cutting machine, that’s totally ok, I only have the Cricut Air 2, so this tutorial will be based on using that.
Uploading into Cricut Design Space
Open your Cricut Design Space app and select on new project. Click on “upload”, and you can either drag and drop the file or browse for the file. You can decide which is easier for you. It’ll take you to the save section where you will need to give the file a name. Tags are optional but I just put mini pinata for mine so all the mini pinata files will be together. That window will close, and you’ll see the file below. Click on it then press “upload”.
Now you have the firework mini pinata file on the canvas. Repeat the uploading part for the details if you want them.
Changing Cut lines into Score lines
We need to make some changes to this file before we get to cut it out. As much as I’d love for everything to be cut ready, Cricut Design Space needs to know what to cut, and what to score. Now to make things easier for you, I have group items together. When you first upload the file into Cricut Design space everything is group together. Click on “ungroup”.
Now if you click on the inside of a panel, more pieces will be selected. Go over to the menu and select on “operation”, scroll down and click on “score”. By changing this, the machine will know this area needs to be scored and not cut. But we are not done yet, we need to click on “ungroup” again, so all the score lines are disconnected from each other. Select the panels and click on “ungroup”. Now everything is separated, we need to attach the score lines to their own panel.
Select the panel and score lines by dragging the box over both, then head over to the actions menu and select “attach”. It’s the one that looks like a paperclip. Repeat this process for the other panels and door panel.
Resizing your Firework Mini pinata
Once everything is done, let’s make sure the pinata is the size you want, before wasting your cardstock on the wrong size. If you have details, just grab the base of the pinata and drag the details on top. If it’s too big or small, fix the detail size to match the base of the pinata. (Do not touch the size of pinata base. We are only changing the size of the details.)
When the details match your desired size, select everything on the canvas, and resize the whole project together, by clicking on the little box and dragging to the size you like. Mine are 6.5 inches tall.

Cutting our pinata out
If everything is done, it’s time to save our project. Give it a name. Now it’s finally time to hit that Make it button. You will be taken to a preview screen, this where you will select how you are cutting (on mat) and resize your paper to make sure the file is cut out on the correct size cardstock. Cricut has changed the sizes in this section. (not the best move, Cricut) and now we do not have the 8×11 selection. But they did leave a 10×12, so I selected that.
The next screen you can rearrange your panels to make sure they will fit on your cardstock. Once everything looks good, we can apply our cardstock on the light grip cutting mat, making sure to press down and around to make sure it’s adhered to the mat. Insert the Score pen into the A chamber and load your mat into the machine by pressing the blinking arrow button. Make sure your settings are set to Cardstock +, then press the blinking “C’ button to begin cutting. Once it’s done, press the blinking arrow button again, and your mat will come out of the machine.
Flip your mat over and bend it, carefully take your cardstock pieces off. Bending the mat helps your cardstock from not curling on you when you are removing it. Repeat until everything is done.

Prep and Assemble Time
Time for the fun stuff. Folding all the pieces where the score pen went to create our tabs. We have top tabs, bottom tabs, and connecting tabs. Once you have everything folded, let’s grab our glue. The best glue to use is something that dries quickly. I like Aleena’s quick and dry glue. I don’t recommend Hot Glue because it burns and you can’t fix something if it needs fixing.

Start with the base panel first, apply glue to the bottom tab of the first side panel, line it up, and press it into place. Next, grab the 2nd panel, apply glue to the bottom tab and also the connecting tab on the side, line it up, press it into place, and connect the two side panels together with the connecting tab. Repeat until we get to the door. The only part we are adding glue to, is the side connecting tab onto the door. That’s it.

Now, leave the door in the open position, and apply glue to the top tabs all around. No glue on the door. Grab your top panel and starting on one side, line it up, press it into place, then move on to the other sides. If you need to insert something for support while holding in place, a pencil or weeding tool does the trip.
Completing our Pinata
If you want to give this the full pinata look, you’ll need to add some crepe paper. It’s very simple to create, just take a few pieces of crepe paper, fold it over, and make cuts down. We are making fringes. You can do this to both sides, then cut down the middle lengthwise to create two strands of fringes. Starting at the bottom, apply glue and wrap it around until you get to the top.
You can skip the fringe part and leave them naked with the details on top. This looks especially cute with different cardstock colors. If you cut out detail pieces, apply those to the front of the pinata. Add your ribbon to the door for easy access to the goodies.

Congrats crafter, you just made a cute Firework Mini Pinata.
