Learn how to make Pumpkin sun catcher crafts with your Cricut to keep the kids entertained this fall.
Hello Magical Crafters. Today is a fun and simple crafting day that will involve the kiddos. And if your like me, you can throw in an educational lesson as well. My daughter has been enjoying more hands on arts and crafts projects which made me think of making these easy Pumpkin Sun catchers.
In this tutorial, I have a free pumpkin template you can use to craft along with me. I’ve also made cute little Candy Corn Monsters as well that can be found in our Magical Crafting Library.
Supplies needed to make these sun catchers are…
- Cricut cutting machine ( I have the Explore Air 2)
- Cricut cutting mat
- Heavy weight cardstock ( I used both the 65lb and above and they both did well)
- Tissue paper ( cut into small pieces)
- Glue stick ( or contact paper for the little kiddos)
- Pumpkin SVG file
Click on the green button above to download your Pumpkin Craft along file to your computer. If you’d like to know how to create your own SVG files, let me know below and I’ll be happy to create a tutorial for you using the Inkscape program. Once you have your Pumpkin file downloaded, let’s head over to Design Space.
Access some of our SVG files in our Magical Crafting Library, to help you craft the day away.
Uploading in Design Space
Head down and click on the “upload” button on the left side of your screen. You can either “drag and drop” the file or click on “browse” to manually find and upload it. It will autoumactilly take you to the save option screen.
Add in a new title if you like and a few tags. Since we are using this file as a cut file we will be selecting the “save as cut file” option. Now we need to click our recently uploaded Pumpkin file to upload it into Design Space.
Cutting our Pumpkins out
Once we have our Pumpkins uploaded, resize them to your desired size. I made a few different sizes ranging from 3ins to 6ins. You can even play around with the “roundness” of the pumpkins by unlocking the size lock and distorting the pumpkins a little.
If you want to change out the paper colors, just select your pumpkins, then head to the top of the screen and select your color of choice. Once you are happy with the pumpkins, it’s time to click the “make it” button at the top right side of your screen.
You are now taken to a preview screen. This is where you see how many sheets you need and in what color order they will be cut in. You are also able to change the paper size for each mat section. It automatically defaults to a 12x 12 sheet, but if you have a 8.5x 11 sheet, click on the arrow drop down box.
Then select your paper size. If your design is a little bigger then your selected choice, it will remove the extra pumpkins onto another sheet and mat. Click “continue”.
Place your cardstock on the mat, pressing down and smoothing over the paper with your hand or roller to make sure the whole sheet is adhere to the mat.
If your mat is loosing some of its stickiness in certain areas, you an use masking tape or electrical tape on the edges of the paper to help keep it in place. Just make sure the tape is not in the way of the cutting.
Upload your mat into the machine by pressing the arrow button. Make sure your cut settings is set to “cardstock”. Then press the flashing light “go” button, to begin the cutting process.
Once the machine is done cutting, press the “arrow” button again to unload the mat. Flip the mat upside down, then peel away the mat from the paper. This will allow the paper to not curl up and you can save the scrape pieces for another project.
Pumpkin Sun Catchers are made
Congrats crafters. You should now have a few pumpkin sun catcher silahettes looking at you. The only final steps you need is to cut up the tissue paper in tiny squares. Hand over the Pumpkins, tissue paper squares, and a glue stick to your kiddos so they can craft these cuties together.
And if you have younger kiddos, just grab some contact paper or Press ‘N’ Seal to place on the pumpkin first, then just let them stick the tissue paper onto it. Add some tape and stick them to the windows so they can catch the sun.
If you use yellow and red tissue paper, then hang them up in the window, the colors will make an orange where they overlap. Easy color lesson added into the crafting project.
