Hello Magical Crafters!

Are you ready to dive into all things no sew related? I love to craft up a variety of things and this is one of them. To kickstart our new section of no sew crafts, I bring you a completely no sew Voodoo doll tutorial using your hot glue gun. Just in time for Halloween. I’ve added a template you can print out and use if you need it along with an SVG file too.

Supplies needed to make your Voodoo Doll are…

  • Fabric ( at least 12 inches by 12 inches)
  • Stuffing for the doll ( you can use the stuffing out of an old stuffed animal)
  • Hot glue gun
  • glue sticks
  • Fabric pen or pencil ( to draw out our design)
  • Puffy Fabric paint ( For the stitching effect)
  • 2 Buttons ( For the eyes)
  • Red beads for the heart
  • Yarn for the hair
  • Scissors
  • Doll template file

Access some of our SVG files in our Magical Crafting Library, to help you craft the day away.

Head on over to the Magical Crafting Library to download and print out the Voodoo Doll template. You can free draw your own doll outline on the fabric, just make sure you have the arms and legs bigger then normal.

Creating our doll

Before we start, let’s plug in our Hot glue gun and let it start warming up. Fold your fabric in half and trace the outline of the doll template onto the fabric. Grab your scissors and cut the doll out of the fabric. You should now have two fabric dolls.

You may have awkward cuts here and there but that’s ok. Take your scissors and cut little slits all around the edge of the dolls. Using your glue gun, add tiny dots of glue and fold each section over to create a more smoother effect and it also gives you a section later for the Fabric paint.

Once your doll looks like the ones above, it’s time to put them together. Starting from the neck and working in small sections, add the hot glue to the folded creases and put the edges together. Work your way all around the doll, until you have about an inch left. Now it’s time to add the stuffing.

stuffing our doll

Add in the stuffing through the hole you left. Using your pen, you can help move the stuffing down into the legs and arms area. Over stuff the head so you will be left with a round head and not a flat one. Add the hot glue to the rest of the fabric to seal in your head.

Adding the hair

Now you should have a stuffed doll. If you are wanting to add in hair, now is the time to do it. Pick which side you want the back to be. Working in sections with the hot glue, add small amounts of glue to the top of the head, adding the yarn going to the back. This will create a nice hair look to the doll.

Adding the hair

The hair length is completely up to you. To tell you the truth, I was watching Corpse Bride while making this doll, so in a sense, that was my inspiration. I also added a few small pieces of yarn to the front of the doll by the top. This added in a nice bang look to the doll.

Final details for our Voodoo Doll

Next we need to add in the final touches to bring our Voodoo doll to life. Add two drops of glue to the face area for the eyes. Add your buttons on top of the glue, be careful not to touch the hot glue. I also had little blue beads that I added inside the buttons to give them more of an eye look.

Adding in the final touches to our doll

Using your fabric pen, draw a tiny heart on the right side of the chest. Trace the heart over with the hot glue, then quickly add in the red beads. Now you have a cute little heart. If you would like to add more detailing features, like a mouth, you can do it with the beads and hot glue as well or with the Puffy paint we are about to use.

To get the classic look of stitches going around the edges of the doll, I used Black Puffy Paint. The pattern going around the dolls edge, is making small “x”, and connecting each end point to the previous “x”. I did only do one side of the doll. You can totally do the other side as well, but you will need to wait and let the paint dry first before moving on to the back side.

You can add in fabric or tulle on top of the doll to create clothes, but I think it looks fine just like this.
