Layered ornament

Do you want a customized family Christmas ornament to hang on the tree this year?

Hello Magical Crafters! We are a family of four this year. So that means we need four stockings hung on the mantle and a new Christmas Ornament as well. Which got me thinking about a layered ornament.

I thought of creating a Christmas Ornament out of cardstock and layering them to give it a shadow box feel to it. I wanted it to have some depth to it instead of being completely flat like paper typically is.

The best way to bring my idea to life is to use my Cricut cutting machine. I have the Explore Air 2 and honestly I just love everything about it. From making cute Christmas shirts the whole family can wear to making holiday cards and thank you stickers, it definitely helps get my creative juices flowing and see my creations go from my mind to reality.

Materials needed to make this Ornament are…

  • Heavy cardstock
  • Green Light cardstock
  • Red glitter cardstock
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Foam double sided tape
  • Pen or marker
  • Cricut Explore Air 2
  • Cutting mat (recommend the blue mat, but an used green one would be good too)

Access some of our SVG files in our Magical Crafting Library, to help you craft the day away.

I’ve also included a few Harry Potter style Christmas Ornaments for you to make too. They can be found at the end of this tutorial.

To begin this project, I sketched up my design on paper to get an idea of what I was wanting. Then I headed over to Inkscape and started to draw it out. Inkscape is a free vector style design software that I use to create all of my designs. If you’d like a tutorial on the basics, I’d be happy to make one for you. This is a simple combination of shapes coming together to create our Ornament.

Cricut Design Space

Next we head over to our Cricut Design Space and click on new project.

Cricut design space

Go down to the left bottom of the screen and click on upload image. ( This is how it shows up on my Phone’s screen.)

You can “drag and drop” or click on the “browse” to search for it. Once it comes up Design Space asks you how complex is the image. I almost always use the more complex button and it has given me great results.

Next, it allows you to clean up your image. If you have any white area you do not want in your project, now is the time to erase it.

Once you have your image the way you want it, click next and it now asks you how you want to save it. For this project, we are going to save it as a “cut file”.

Don’t forget to give it a name and a few tags to help find it later.

Now after all that work it brings us back to the upload screen. Find your new image we just created and click “upload”.

Turn on your Cricut cutting machine and get your choice of color cardstock and cutting mat.

Cricut cutting mat

Line up your cardstock in the order it shows up on the screen. This helps you make sure you are using the right sheet at the right time.

Double check the cut setting on your machine. When using the glitter stock, place it glitter side down for easier cutting.

Place your cardstock on your mat, press the “arrow button” to feed your mat into the machine, then press the “go” button. Repeat this process until all of the sheets are done.

Layering time.

taping the ornament

Start with the bottom layer, the main ornament shaped one.

  1. Add the foam tape to first layer, then place your background layer on top.
  2. Cut the tape in small sections and apply to the four points of the ornament.
  3. Add each small hanging ball ornament ontop of each other, using the double sided foam tape.
  4. After you have taped and layered each section, its time to add the final touches.

  1. Use the glue to wrap the ribbon around the outside of the ornament.
  2. Glue the glitter circles on top of each hanging circle.
  3. Grab the pen and write in your names next to each section.
  4. I also added in the year at the bottom.
Ribbon and bow

When I first made my ornament I realized my lines were to small. So I added some ribbon in the inside rim of my ornament to hide the foam tape that was showing.

To complete our layered ornament, I tied a simple pipe cleaner through the top and curled the endings on top of the ribbon bow.
