Learn how to make your own Haunted House Luminaries using your Cricut and cardstock.

Hello my Magical Crafters!

Do you ever walk into the stores and want to grab all of the haunted houses and little luminaries only for your inner voices to say “no, we can’t get all of them” and the other one saying ” girl, save your money and go make your own”. Yes, normally the second one wins but I end up not making them and then another year goes by. Not this year.

Today, we are making our own simple Haunted House luminary with the help of our Cricut.

Supplies needed to make your own paper Haunted houses are…

  • Heavy weight Cardstock
  • Cricut machine ( I have the Explore Air 2)
  • Cutting mat ( I used the green one, but I’d recommend the blue for paper)
  • Score pen
  • Glue
  • Tea light Candle (I like the battery ones since the outside will be paper)
  • Free Haunted House craft along file

Access some of our SVG files in our Magical Crafting Library, to help you craft the day away.

Head on over to our Magical Crafting Library to download your Haunted House Luminary file. I create all of my files in a program called Inkscape. It’s free to use and easy to learn how to make your own designs. Once your file is downloaded, lets head over to Cricut Design Space.

Uploading in Design Space

Select “new project” and head down to the left side of your screen and press the “upload” button. It’s going to show you a screen with three options. Upload image, upload pattern, and recently uploaded. We are going to select “upload image”. Now you can either “drag and drop” the Haunted house file or click on “browse” to find the file.

Next, you can rename the file and add a few tags. Then we are going to click on the “save as cut file” option. Now it’ll show up in your recently uploaded section. Click on it and press “insert image” at the bottom right side of your screen.

Since we are folding this up, we have to have score lines to help us fold it exactly where we need to. Ungroup the house and select the inner lines. Go to the top and change the setting to “score”. This will turn the lines into scoring lines for the score pen to go over. Attach the score lines to the house.

Resize the Haunted house to your desired size. The height is more of where you want to focus on, the width will be folded up. Once you have it to the size you want it, it’s time to click “make it” at the top of the screen.

Cutting out our paper Haunted House Luminaries

Once you click on the “make it” button, you will be presented a preview of how many mats you need. If you are not using the default size of 12×12 paper, you need to hit the drop down button and select your sized paper. Once everything looks good, lets start cutting.

Place your cardstock on to the mat and make sure to rub over and smooth the paper down.

If your mat is loosing some stickiness, you can use masking tape or electrical tape to help keep the paper in place.

Now let’s load our mat into the machine by lining it up and pressing the arrow button to feed it in. Double check your cut settings is set to “cardstock” and that you inserted the score pen. Then press the “go” flashing light button.

Once it’s done cutting, press the “arrow” button again to unload the mat. Flip the mat over and peel the mat away from the paper. This helps keep the paper from curling and letting you reuse the scrape pieces. Repeat until everything is cut out.

Assembling our house

Once you have your house cut out, the fun part begins. Fold the paper in where the score pen went over.

Add a line of glue to the tab and attach to the inside of wall.

If you want to add in little details like cob webs and bats, don’t let me stop you. Insert the tea light candle in the middle and you just created your own house.

Now you should be proud of yourself, because you just made one of the paper Haunted house Luminaries all by yourself. Isn’t it glorious.
