Make your own Gingerbread house Ornament using your Cricut and cardstock.

Hello Magical crafters!

Christmas is coming and it seems all the stores are loaded up with Christmas decorations of all themes. My daughter saw a cute gingerbread house that lit up and I immediately thought of making our own so she can build one herself.

The one we are doing today is more of an layered ornament style where we can hang on the tree.

Supplies needed to make your own Gingerbread house ornament are …

  • Cricut machine (I have explore air 2)
  • Light grip cutting mat
  • Score pen
  • Cardstock ( white and colored)
  • Glue
  • Foam tape
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Gingerbread house ornament svg file

Access some of our SVG files in our Magical Crafting Library, to help you craft the day away.

Head over to our Magical Crafting Library and download the Gingerbread house ornament file. I designed this file in Inkscape, which is a free vector design software. If you’d like to know how to use it, I’d be happy to do a tutorial for you. Once downloaded, lets head over to Design Space.

Uploading in Design Space

Click on “new project” for a new canvas. Go down the left side of the menu and click on “upload”. Next click on ‘Upload image” and you can either drag and drop or browse for the file. It will bring it up to the title and tag option. You can change the title and add tags so you can find it better in the future. Then click “Upload”. It’ll take you back to the upload screen, click on your image you just uploaded and click on “add to Canvas”.

Changing cut lines into Score Lines

Now you should have the Gingerbread house ornament on the screen. Head over to the right side of the screen and click on “Ungroup”. This will unlock all of the layers. Next, you need to select the lines in the center of the house and change them from a cut into score lines. This option is located at the top of the screen under “operation”.

After changing it to score, select the lines and the house and attach them. This way during the making process, the machine will know where to draw the lines at. Do the same method above to the lollipops and the door.

I also duplicated the house base so I can place my ribbon in the middle of the houses and it not show in the back. This is optional.

The last thing to do before we start cutting, will be to change any of the colors to your preferred choices, and to resize the Gingerbread house ornament to your desired size. Once done it’s time to click “Make it” in the right hand corner of the screen.

Cutting our Gingerbread house Ornament out

Once you click on “Make it”, you will be taken to the preview screen. Here is where you can change the paper sizes to what you have on hand. Like for the gumdrops, I’ll be using scrap paper for them instead of a 12×12 sheet. So this is the time to move them on the paper and make sure it’ll be cutting on the paper.

You also should gather all of your cardstock you are going to be using and put them in the order it shows on the screen. This will help you remember which paper you need for each cut.

If everything looks good, it’s time to make it.

Depending on the type of cardstock you are using depends on the settings. If you decide to use glitter for the gumdrops and lollipops, turn the setting to cardstock plus, and flip the glitter cardstock over where the pretty side is facing down. This will give you a better cut on the glitter cardstocks.

Apply your cardstock to your light grip mat, smoothing over the paper making sure its fully adhered to the mat. Press the blinking arrow to load the mat in. Next, press on the blinking C button to start the cutting. Make sure you add the score pen when prompt.

Scoring house

Once it’s done cutting, press the arrow button again to unload the mat. Flip your mat over, then peel the mat away from the cardstock. This will help your paper from curling up. Repeat these steps until all of the cuts are done.

Assembling our house

After everything is cut out, it is time to assemble our house. Grab the front panel of the house to start assembly. ( The one with the score lines)

For the peppermint window frame, peppermints, lollipops, and icing, use the glue first to put them together.

gluing detailing pieces

Grab your scissors and foam tape. Apply the tape to the back of the icing panels, the gumdrops, window bases, window icing, and door.

Then attach them to the house. Adding in the foam tape gives our house the 3d effect. It will also help if you use your tweezers for picking up the small pieces and placing on the house.

Adding details to house

The last step is to attach our ribbon to the house so we can hang it. Grab your backside panel and place some glue in the middle. Make a loop with the ribbon and add the end pieces to the glue. Next, add more glue around the inside panel and attach it to the decorated house.

Gingerbread house ornament is complete

Congrats crafter, you just made your own Gingerbread house ornament using your Cricut. Now the only thing left to do is hang it on the tree for all to see your beautiful creation.

For a more kid friendly alternative, you could just hand them a glue stick and let them decorate the house as they wish.
