Learn how to make this cute mini heart piñata using your Cricut cutting machine.
Hello Magical Crafters, Valentine’s Day is coming up soon and what better way to celebrate the love day then with this Mini Heart Piñata.
The Mini Heart Piñata is perfect to hold all the Valentine’s cards or a special note to your special someone, along with some sweet treats.
Supplies needed to make this cute Mini Piñata
- Cricut machine (I use the Explore Air 2)
- Light grip mat
- Heavy cardstock (65lb -80lb)
- Light colored cardstock
- Score pen
- Crepe paper
- Scissors
- Glue ( I use Beacon 3 in1 Glue)
- Ribbon
- Free mini heart Piñata SVG
Click on the button above to be taken to the library and download the mini Heart Piñata file. You may use a different electronic cutting machine, but for this tutoiral, I’ll be using my Cricut Explore Air 2.
Once the file has downloaded let’s head over to Cricut Design Space.
Uploading in Cricut Design Space
Head down the left side of your screen and click on “upload”. Click on the “insert image” option and you can either drag and drop or browse for the Mini Heart Piñata file.
It will take you to the save option screen. You can rename this file and add a few tags to help find it in the future. Click on save as “cut file”.
Now you should have the svg file template in Design Space. But there’s some work we need to do before we press that make it button.
Changing cut lines into score lines
We need to first, head to the right side of the screen and click on “Ungroup”. Next we need to go over to our strips and click on the inner rectangle. Head to the top of the screen and click on the drop down menu, then select the “score line” option.
Now we need to repeat this for the other strip and the back door to the Piñata as well. Once we change the inner cut lines into score lines, we need to attach them.
You will have to do this one at a time. Go back to the first strip and select both the score line and cut shape. Then head down the right side menu and click on the “attach” button ( looks like a paperclip). This will tell the machine that the score lines go with that cut shape. Repeat the others until done.
Once everything is attached to the right things, click on select all at the top of the screen and resize it to the size you’d like the Mini Piñata to be. Now it’s time to click that “make it” button at the top.
Cutting our heart Piñata out
Double check your settings in the cut preview screen and arrange your cardstock colors in the order it gives you. Then click on “continue”.
Align your cardstock on the mat and smooth it over, making sure it’s adhere to the mat. Insert the mat into the machine by pressing the blinking arrow button.
Make sure you insert the score pen, and check your cut settings, it should be on cardstock. Then press the blinking “c” button to start the cut.
Once it’s finish, unload the mat by pressing the arrow button again, flip the mat over and peel it away from the cardstock. This helps the cardstock not to curl up.
Prepping and attaching our Heart
Repeat these steps until it’s all done. Grab your strips and back door, fold along the score lines. Bend your strips around your fingers or wrist to soften the curve a bit.
Now we just need to glue everything together. Lay the back heart down, grab one tab and place the beginning of it at the dip in the heart. Making sure the tabs are facing inward. Repeat with the other strip, connecting the side tabs to each strip.
Add glue to all the tabs on the top, then lay the front heart on top.
Time to add the door. You can make it open by pulling it down or by lifting it up. This is completely up to you and it’ll work both ways.
Add glue to the small tab and attach the door to the back heart panel. Now we have a 3d heart.
Turning our Heart into a Piñata
To finish our Piñata we need to add the Crepe paper but first let’s attach our ribbon to the Piñata.
Thread the ribbon through the two holes in the back of the heart, above the door. Make a double knot with the knot being inside the Piñata.
Once the ribbon is secure, it’s time to cut our Crepe paper. Fold the Crepe paper in half and make cuts all the way down making sure not to cut all the way through to the other side.
Open your paper up and cut along the folded line. Now you have two pieces.
Starting at the bottom, apply glue as you go and wrap the Crepe paper to the heart, while wrapping the tissue paper upwards. You will be going in an upward spiral around the heart.
When you come to the door, go ahead and continue gluing the crepe paper. Once you finished covering the mini heart piñata, go back with a sharp blade and cut along the door sides.
Make sure the sides are cut out. Then you can push it back in place and fold down the crepe paper over.
Once the heart is covered, it’s time to decorate. If you wish, you can leave it as is, but I thought adding in some ribbon would make it look all the better.
This is optional. You could also make a smaller heart that you can cut out along with your heart above to add on top. You can either glue the cardstock heart to the front, or add some double sided foam tape to give it a bit of depth. If you’d like to add words, make the heart, then add your word inside the heart, then select both and press “slice” button. This will give you the word inside the heart.
Congrats Crafter! You just made your very own Mini Heart Piñata. Perfect for Valentine’s Day.
Add in the special chocolates or gift card for that special someone. Both of my girls are going to love getting these this year, I’ll also be adding in a few stickers and Mini coloring pages.
