Learn to make these easy conversations heart sun catchers craft for the kiddos this Valentine’s day.

Hello Magical Crafters, today we are going to be making these cute and easy Conversations heart sun catchers that the kiddos can help complete.

Since Valentine’s day is coming up, these will be perfect to have and decorate the home for the holiday. And we are going to take these a step farther and add a hole and string and hang them up like a wind chime.

Supplies needed to make these heart catchers are…

  • Cricut cutting machine ( I use Cricut Explore Air™ 2 machine” target=”_blank”>Explore Air 2)
  • Light grip mat
  • Cardstock (65lb is best to keep shape)
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue (kids glue stick works well)
  • String or ribbon
  • Stick or wooden dowel
  • Free Heart catcher SVG file

Head on over to our Magical Crafting Library to download the free Conversation Heart Sun catchers file. Once downloaded, let’s head on over to Cricut Design Space.

Uploading in Design Space

Once you click on new project, head down the left hand side of the screen and click on “upload”. You will be taken to a screen asking to upload an image or a pattern. Click on “upload image”.

You can either drag and drop the Hearts Svg file or you can click on “browse” and find it to upload it. It should now take you to a screen asking how’d you like to save it. We are doing a cutting file, so go ahead and click on “save as cut file”. You can also add your own tags to help find it quicker in the future.

Now that we saved the file, you will have to click on the new file you just uploaded below and then click on the “upload” button at the right side of the screen.

You should now have six kinds of Conversation hearts on the screen. You can resize them to your desired size while they are grouped together.

If you want to change colors or individual sizes, head over to the right side of your screen and click on “ungroup”. This will allow you to hide and move individual hearts.

Once everything looks good on screen, it’s time to click that “make it” button at the top right side of the screen.

Cutting our Conversations Hearts

Double check you have the correct size paper on the mat and arrange your cardstock colors with the order on the screen. Then press continue.

Double check your cut settings are set on cardstock. Place your cardstock onto the mat and smooth it onto the mat, applying a little to pressure making sure it’s adhere to the lightgrip mat.

Line the mat up onto the machine and press the flashing arrow button to load the mat into the machine. Next, press the flashing C button to begin the cutting process.

Once everything is done cutting, press the arrow button again to unload the mat.

Flip the mat over and peel the mat away from the cardstock to help the cardstock not to curl up. Repeat this process until all of your hearts are done.

Finishing and Assembling our Hearts

This next step you can let the kiddos help. Tear or cut up some tissue paper and give the pieces to the kids along with a glue stick. Add glue to the heart, and then to each piece of tissue paper they are laying down.

To make this craft more toddler friendly, add tape to the front side of the heart, then flip it over where the sticky side is facing up. Now the toddler can just stick the tissue paper to it without needing glue.

Let them place the tissue paper on the back sides of the conversation hearts. Once they are done, trim the extra pieces off the edges.

assembling the heart sun catchers

Cut 6 peices of ribbon. You can make 2 of each length. Tie a knot at one end, then thread it through one heart. Repeat this process with the rest of the Conversation hearts. Now you can stop here and hang them up or you can go a step farther and glam this project up a bit.

adding string to each loop on hearts

I went ahead and added some of the leftover tissue paper around my stick. I then took the ribbon and wrapped it around the stick, and tied the ends together so I can hang it. Then I added each heart to it, giving each one different lengths with the ribbon.
